TEXT: JAMES 1:22-27
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
What is a hypocrite? It is that state of claiming something that one does not truly have.
The only way to avoid hypocrisy, is to become and stay filled with God’s Spirit. It is to recognize insincerity in the early stages, and to eradicate it. God’s desire is that everyone would abundantly flourish in Him, and not just survive. Jesus defined hypocrisy as something that starts at the root. People don’t just “fall into it,” but it is a gradual process. Professing the truth without God’s Spirit, is the worst kind of hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy is self deception. It is believing all is okay, when everything is not okay. To know we are not really flourishing, but accepting that it is still okay. Where our heart is, is why we are doing what we are doing. Claiming to, but not flourishing with God. Merely filling the expectations for others, …but not for God, …is not flourishing! To be filled with God’s Spirit, is to also visit the lost, and the needy (who have no ability to help themselves), with the compassion of God. To be filled with God’s Spirit will also cause us to keep ourselves unspotted from this sinful world (verse 27).
What is our motivation to profess to serve Christ? Is it to be filled with His Spirit, …to be a doer of His Will? God knows if we are troubled in our experience, and doesn’t desire us to continue that way.
Where are you located here? You can do more than just survive, or to be merely a hypocrite. God can and will fill you with His Spirit and love, fulfilling all your needs. You can flourish!
