TEXT: GENESIS 35:10-15
10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
Jacob had come, with the name that was given him. He left, a changed man, with a name newly given to him by God, as Israel. “Israel” means “power of God”, and soldier of God. God introduced Himself to “Jacob” as “I Am God Almighty!” Then God renamed Jacob, “Israel ” Although many seek God, to come into His presence as they are, they will not stay as they are (a sinner), or they have not been changed to the holiness God Saves His children into. A changed person will be fruitful in the righteousness and power God gives. It is the only way we can truly honor God. In Acts the second chapter, we read how many seeking God in sincerity were transformed by the presence of God in the upper room while in prayer. And that is how it is. For if we are not changed when we make our “profession” we didn’t really find God. For to find God, is to be a truly “new” person. No more “business as usual” before and after making our “profession.” There sincerely will be the fruits then, of holiness to testify the change God has made within us.
God’s presence will dramatically transform one, to the redeemed person He died for. IF we meet His conditions. Otherwise, as so much of mere religion “produces,” we will go out the same as we came in, with only a profession, and not the possession. To come into God’s presence as we are, will mean we leave the “old paths of sin” behind. We will be fully tired of it, …if we sincerely seek God. God’s holiness will make us whole, in the image of Himself. It fixes the spiritual needs we all have. If one is saved, that indicates they are “saved from something.” We then become a changed person! We read in the 32nd chapter of Genesis, where Jacob wrestled with an angel of God, until God would bless him. Because Jacob was determined to have God’s blessing, God gave him a new name, to represent the change that had taken place. Israel, …instead of Jacob. The name “Israel” …because he had power with God. We cannot have power with God, unless we allow God to change us. Changed (or redeemed) …out of sin. It is a sober message, lest we make a mockery of God’s presence.
Come as you are, but leave as a changed person!
