TEXT: PSALMS 61:1-8

1 To the chief Musician upon Neginah, A Psalm of David. Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
2  From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3  For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
4  I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.
5  For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.
6  Thou wilt prolong the king’s life: and his years as many generations.
7  He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.
8  So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

To consider the boundaries of life that keep us on the straight and narrow, is to consider the ways of God. It is the way of  keeping our vows in holiness, that will keep us out of “trouble.”  It is the way that God’s people are instructed to choose. Yet still, we are all given a choice every day. The way of vanity, or that of God’s better way.  If we obey it, it will keep us out of the ways of “the world” and sin.  For all ways that are not of God, are of vanity.  And all vanity is in opposition to God.

In 2 Samuel 11:1-5,6-9,11 we read the account of how King David, became careless in his soul, and did not do as the custom, which was for kings  to fight with their army at battle.  It was here that he walked in his own wisdom, which resulted in his sin of adultery.  When Bathsheba became pregnant from him, David connived to cover his sin, by ensuring that Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, died in battle.  The lesson here, is when we choose our own ways, it results in sin.  This will further deceive our soul to further depths of vanity and sin.  Vanity will overwhelm our soul, ultimately with that which our personal wisdom cannot solve.  That’s when we need to remember God is a strong high tower, and the only genuine answer for our problems.

If we think we can get along without God’s wisdom, we deceive ourselves. When we let go of the vanity and foolishness of personal opinions, then God can be ..our strong high tower.
