TEXT: I SAMUEL 1:1-7, 26-28
1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.
6 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
26 And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD. 27 For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him: 28Therefore also I have lent to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
Hannah was provoked by her adversary for being barren. So when going up to the temple for the offerings, she petitioned for a child, promising to lend him back to the Lord to serve all of his days. Eli the prophet noticed her lips moving and inquired about it. Hannah told him of her bitterness and sorrowful spirit while praying. Eli bid her to go in peace and prophesied that her petition would be granted (verses 10-17).
Hannah is one of several godly examples of motherhood in the bible. She raised the son God gave her (Samuel), in the love and admonition of the Lord. Today society doesn’t really appreciate motherhood like they should. Sometimes even disparaging a mother’s God given role. Children are not a threat to a woman’s body as commonly promoted in our popular culture. Consequently the “species of motherhood” no longer exists as it once did. But God loves mothers. Without mothers, …the world would not exist! For motherhood is essential to human life.
Spiritually, The Church as the Mother is essential for souls to get what they need to live and thrive. Children of the flesh, might wonder and ask why they were raised in the fear of God; later they will realize why a mom instilled them to know about Him; it is to help them make heaven their goal. For a godly mother causes a child to know there are certain ways they should go in their choices in life, …which is to recognize their need to live free from sin.
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Proverbs 31:10
We all need to understand what it means to be a virtuous mother. Honoring Mothers…
