Sunday Morning Podcast June 4, 2017. Bro. Dave Goble.
16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
There’s this thought about good, that’s of getting along, staying together, and happiness. But you cannot truly be happy without God. Some, even though they profess to live for God, aren’t always happy like they should be. Too many when they don’t get their own way, aren’t happy. But God is concerned and wants us be and stay happy. Ultimately to be really happy, you must live within God’s holiness.
It’s when things get really hard that you find out what you possess in your heart. When the flesh gets in the way, you won’t have happiness, because you pressed for your own way. Not infrequently an adolescent doesn’t think they need to go according to the example of their elder’s good wisdom to be happy. This can also happen spiritually to adults, when one thinks that there is no need to apply spiritual examples to their own every day living. Often, just like with younger people, adults want to be accepted by their peers on the job, school, etc. But needing to be accepted there, has selfishness at it’s root. God is not being followed in their definition of good.
Many think they are the components of a good person. Nice, kind, generous, etc. As if they are so, without full consecration to God. They want others to accept them as being good. And often because they might see hypocrisy in the church, they don’t define goodness as being singularly from God. Often they are also only concerned with being good, because of their fear of hell. So they themselves, are hypocrites. “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be see of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.” Matthew 6:5 “That they may be seen of men.” Jesus had a very low opinion of hypocrites, with no patience, (John 2:13-16)! For hypocrites live with a pretense of being what they are not.
Thankfully there’s a Savior that will help you to be of the goodness that only comes from God! God has a gift for you to have His goodness, His holiness with grace, and not be a hypocrite pretending to possess God’s goodness. If we are following all of what God leads in, we are not going to be carnal. God has a better way of not being one way around God’s people, and another way, away from them. Self and sin always leaves us short of God’s goodness.
Goodness only comes from God, and not of yourself.
