TEXT: COLOSSIANS 3:1-10
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
Being thankful. What helps? What hinders? The older you get, it is harder to change. And everyday, many things change. It can make us feel unthankful. If you value God, until the day you die there will be opposition to take away what He has given you to change; change to keep your Salvation. Things that God would have us to “put off” to keep our Salvation are; anger, wrath, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth, (verse 8). ‘We’ have a part to play. Sometimes it is hard not to be distracted away from thanksgiving. It is because we have an opponent, ..Satan.
Before Salvation, some of the things to put off before we can go through the door of thankfulness, are fornication, uncleanness, covetousness; these are just a few sins that are named (verse 5). These things are a wall of separation, and a hindrance to our soul. That wall makes it hard to see through to the door of thankfulness. And opening the door of thankfulness is vital, to get and stay saved! God designed that it would be essential spiritually to be thankful. It is key to life, regardless of how hard your life has been. To live instead for the flesh, is to live a life without boundaries. It is to live a life out of control; in lust, evil, etc. But Jesus has given us boundaries to help us!
Even if we don’t feel happy, we can open the door of thankfulness that God has provided. When we mortify those sins and weights, give them to Jesus, He will lift them out of our way; taking away hindrances to the door opening of thankfulness. For sin cannot enter through this door, that God has provided for a life lived in holiness. The door to thankfulness opens the door also to putting on mercy, humility, kindness, meekness, and forgiveness, (Colossians 3:12). The world, and that also of mere religion, is so unhappy because of unthankfulness, brought on by their fleshly hindrances. Pray for God to help you put off those fleshly hindrances.
