TEXT:1 SAMUEL 17:50-51
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
This story of a great victory against impossible odds, is well known even in the world. The victory of a small shepherd boy over a giant warrior. Mere stones were taken out of the river by David, to use in his move to conquer the Philistine giant Goliath. But they weren’t just any stones. They were smooth stones. “And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherds’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:40 There is a lesson here in how those stones became smooth. For the stones to end up smooth, they came rolling down the nearby mountain from high up, and into the brook. They began as jagged and sharp rocks. It takes much buffeting from the currents of the brook, to began to smooth those rocks out. David knew if they were smooth stones, it would be more effective to hit the target aimed for from the sling. There is a lesson or ministry here, in this example.
The brook in this lesson represents life, and it’s oppositions. The rough currents of a brook, is often constant. Both literally, and also spiritually. Those stones, or rocks, represent us …individually. We start out in life with rough jagged edges, that have yet to be tried and smoothed by the brook or life’s currents. This is the mission of the brook, or of life in general, which helped the target to be hit in this passage. Without the rough currents of life, we cannot be smoothed into usefulness for God. We need a “process,” the buffeting of the gospel “currents” to prepare us to be victorious over every and anything, that would defeat our soul in service for God. God hits us with the rock of His Word, with the accuracy of what we need. But if you don’t want to go where God wants you to, you won’t be helped. God’s smoothing us out, will give us shape, structure, and the ability to walk in His Will. Each situation can prepare us to be better used by God. Do you remember your attitudes when you first came to God? What has God changed in you through the ministry of those buffeting trials? Have you allowed God to smooth you out for His service?
