TEXT: 2 TIMOTHY 4:1-8
1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Finishing your course! Or …finishing your race! This is about keeping on and finishing to the end, the race God has given us to run. (1 Corinthians 9:24) It will require us to follow any instructions our Savior has for us to follow. To “… be instant in season, out of season; …” to always be ready! The time will come when people will not endure the sound Word of God. Many will often prefer messages more pleasing to their personal likes, or to their fleshly way of thinking. So they will seek and choose to listen to preachers of more easy and fleshly reasoning. A message that doesn’t ask for, or require their sacrifices and dedication. This false message helped motivate Paul to exhort Timothy to steadfastly preach the truth of God’s word, while he, Paul, finished his course,…or his race in service to Christ.
Finishing the race! In any race there is a particular path to follow, and points of strategy along the way. “Points” that will help us know how to endure to the end! For there will be much opposition…that requires our need to earnestly endeavor to stay the course, on the path. At the end of the race, there will be a great satisfaction at having finished! If you ever needed to compete…..potentially there was a satisfaction when you finished the course. In any race there is a path to follow. As in the temporal, so also it is in the spiritual. 1 Samuel 15, tells of how Samuel gave instructions from God to king Saul of how he was to destroy completely in battle, the Amaleks and all of their possessions. But Saul only destroyed the people, the inferior of possessions, and not the king of Amalek, nor the best of the cattle, …nor the best of anything else they found. And partly for that reason, Saul no longer was blessed as king from God. The kingdom ultimately was rent from him and passed to a better chosen one from God (1 Samuel 15:1-28). It is important to “finish the course” by full obedience to all God has directed. If we inadvertently lose our way off the course God has given, the only way back is through repentance, so we can get back on the course! Our own path or ways are not acceptable to God! We must pay attention closely to what He has shown us! Satan will try to help us rely on an excuse to not listen to the gospel, but instead for a lesser way. Satan will provide us with a counterfeit message that is pleasing to our flesh, and seemingly still be acceptable to God, …even though it isn’t! The course or paths of God, potentially will lead us while in life’s pain and heartbreak. Again God can help us still be victorious, but it will require us to go through, and over it. “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Deuteronomy 31:6 This promise is only given, for all those who run the race, who finish the course, and who are faithful!
Finishing the Race! …Finishing Your Course!
