TEXT: HEBREWS 4:1-5

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

There is a rest, a promise for us that describes this rest, and a concern that we not miss it and be able to partake of it!  Rest is described here as what God entered into, from all His works.  God rested from all His creations, that He had done.  He set aside a day of rest.  God called it a Sabbath, which means rest.  Consider it.  The reason for it.  By nature, people are known to gather to hear God’s Word (church) sometimes, to not feel separated from God.  The rest spoken of here, is a rest from sin and self.  A rest from what is permitted, and what is not permitted by God.  Everyone that has a mind, to understand what’s right, and what’s wrong, has fallen into iniquity.  It is sin and self that separates a soul from God’s rest.  And all  have sinned. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”  Romans 5:12    We realize at some point, that I’m not connected to hope, purpose, and meaning, and I want to be.  The bible has a plan, to deal with this need, and speaks about it.   The bible is a true story, about this beginning of humanity, at first connected, then being separated from God.  The human nature, was disconnected to God because of committed sin.  Adam and Eve in the garden, disobeying by partaking of what God had commanded them not to (Genesis 3rd chapter).  Then there were the pair of brothers (Cain and Able) with the one (Cain) killing his brother Abel,  (Genesis 4:8).  Sin.

The remaining of God’s Word, spoken of in the bible, in some of the different accounts, is about God’s rest, that brings hope, purpose and meaning.  A rest from sin.  When we choose our own way,  give honor elsewhere other than God, we are then serving our self, or our own chosen gods.  Therefore breaking the first commandment from God to mankind. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3  God has already given ALL,  His only begotten Son.  He’s waiting at the altar, while declaring His love for us.  We then must be sure we are putting Him before all and everything else.  “No other gods before me.”   To then be made free from sin.  It’s a choice.  When God gives a commandment, it always requires a choice.   To obey, or not.  To go on in our own self righteousness (which is as filthy rags), or be brought into the Rest (or restoration) of His Righteousness.  “He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”  Psalms 23:3   We are His sheep.  We feed where He leadeth.  He leads into His rest.   Rest from all sin, into His Righteousness.  But we must be connected to God’s rest, or we are separated by sin.   Is your soul connected, or separated?    The world is looking for this rest.   Am I an example of God’s rest to the world?
