Kindness is a virtue of the Spirit, which against there is no law.  It comes with the gifts of God.  When God’s people lose their vision, they become like Israel, here, which Zephaniah is preaching to.   God always had a presence in Israel at any time.   Israel could, and did become lost, but God would use a remnant to raise up His people then, as He still does now.  A consequence of Israel losing their vision, would be they would lose their kindness, as would also God’s people today.

1 The word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

2 I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.

3 I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

4 I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;

5 And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham;

6 And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.

God began this message immediately to His people, to warn and predict what He would do to those who turned away.   This is to Israel, and not their enemies.   We don’t stay God’s people, unless we also take His admonitions.  For the admonitions come, because there is something within us that needs to change!

Josiah, the newly installed young king, wanted to know of the expectations God had for them, His people, as knowledge of it had been forgotten, and displaced.   Displaced by idol worship everywhere in the kingdom.  When the God’s Word and instructions were discovered, Josiah had the knowledge brought to him and imparted for his own instruction.  How very grieved, he was to know how God’s people had drifted away from anything resembling any worship of Him.  Instead their allegiance had focused on Baal,  other false gods, and ungodly living.   Josiah turned all his heart, soul, and ways to please God, so God delayed His penalizing judgments of Israel, for the remaining of Josiah’s life. 2 Kings 22, and 23 chapters.   This turning toward God, was from this study of kindness.

Kindness is also the lesson we learn as part of humility. In Luke 18: 9-14, is the parable of the Pharisee and the publican.  The Pharisee in his unkind heart, was lifted up in pride, esteeming and declaring himself better than a poor publican which recognized he was a lowly sinner.  Because the publican was humble,  God honored him, and forgave his sins, and not the Pharisee, because a kind heart, is also one that is humble and knows to repent of all that displeases God.  “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering: ”   Colossians 3:12
