TEXT: MATTHEW 13:1-9
1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
The parable of the sower, sowing seeds, and the 4 types of ground they were sowed in. The wayside, where the seeds were quickly devoured by the fowls. The stony places, where there was not much soil, so they sprung up, because of no deepness of earth. The thorny ground, where the thorns sprung up, ..choked out the seeds attempt to grow. And then there was the good ground. In this lesson, the focus will be about the good ground. It is only in the good ground, that the seed can take root, bringing forth good fruit. Each one of us, spiritually, likely wants to say, “I’ve got good fruit!” Later, Jesus explains the parable. When one without understanding hears the word, the enemy is quick to take away the ability for it to take root, so it falls by the wayside. Those seeds sown in the stony heart, at first were overjoyed, but because there was no place for it to take root, when came the tribulations of life, endured only a short time, became offended, and fell away also. The seeds sown among thorns, are choked when the thorns of this life’s cares, also spring up, and choke them out. But the seed that falls upon good ground, is he that with understanding hears the word, and then abundantly bears much fruit according to what is received.
The Good Ground. Consecration. Unity. “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;” Philippians 1:27 Unity is more than just getting along with one another. More than churches getting along with churches, than pastors getting along with other pastors. More than just gatherings, and getting along within 4 walls. More than good feelings. Spiritual unity is more. The real purpose of spiritual unity, is to take the gospel to the world. Unity of itself, is a means to the end, and not the end. Otherwise spreading the gospel would be an afterthought. If unity was the end, it would stop showing a need. This thought of unity’s goal, is repeated throughout the scripture, that unity is for the purpose of bearing fruit. In Acts 2, Jesus had asked for the disciples to stay, in one accord, in the upper room, until He would bring them the promise of the Father, the Holy Ghost. It took patience and faith. It took consecration. It took unity. Unity to bring about the power to fulfill the commandment, to share and spread the gospel. Jesus implied a need of consecration as later illustrated in Acts 2, leaving no room for sin or carnality …in order to reach souls with the gospel. We as the church, occupy a very narrow place in the world. What remains after embracing the seeds of God’s Word, is to be consecrated to His very narrow way. “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Matthew 7:14 The good ground, the narrow way, is to be in God’s presence! Only good ground can bear good fruit. All are meant to bear good fruit. It will take consecration. God will keep us while sowing His Word in our hearts of good ground. But you must be consecrated!
