TEXT: MATTHEW 12:36-37
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees who had a double-minded and unkind way of talking. He warned them that their security in Moses’s law, without the love of God, would not favor them at the judgment, when they would have to give an account. The way they treated people was totally contrary to the will of God. Jesus warned that their words would face them at the judgement. Today also, Jesus is taking in account our words and life. He wants us to get the concept of this final accounting, and what will happen then. Of what will we be accountable to? Romans 14:10 “But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgement seat of Christ. Everyone shall give an account before God. What shall we give account for? What shall God require of us on that day? We will give an account for every idle word. Words said in anger. Words of no value, intended to harm. There’s going to be an accounting! What account will we give? “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27 Our death will not be the end, but instead it will be at our judgment! By who and how shall we be judged? Judged of how we did, …or lived today? We must not take it for granted. To think nothing can harm us, is not accurate. To think otherwise, is to be of a false doctrine. There are some things (of our own actions) that can remove us from the Book of Life! There will be a punishment following the judgement! 2 Peter 2:9 “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:” We need to be held accountable and responsible for our life. We can’t count on some of our “better moments,”….but will answer for “every idle word.” “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” 2 Peter 3:7 “A day of perdition for those not found godly on that judgment day.” Don’t think it’s always the other way, or thinking there will not be a punishment. So many different theories, because many cannot imagine a loving God, …is also one of judgment! Revelations 20:11-15 12) “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God, and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 15) “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” The Lord has determined there will be some that will not find rest, but cast in the lake of fire! Be careful in judging people! Judging what’s going to happen, and by what standard, for what standard will our works be judged? Faith without works is dead. Although it is only by faith, that can put us into the book of life. On the other hand without obedience our faith is dead. And yet it is only by faith that we can be saved, and not by works alone. All we have to present to God, is our filthy rags/self. Don’t assume you have anything, …but let God be the judge!
It’s only by God’s mercy that we can be put into the book of life! When God draws us. Our name will then be written in Jesus’s blood, and He will not remove our name from His book of life. Only we can take our name out from the book . If we walk away. As for others, we must leave others in God’s hands. You have no idea what, or where people are in their mind, or mentally at any given moment. For ourselves; “have I done something that I know would separate me from God? Although we need to care about our outward man, we need to care more about our inward man. There are those who say “they love God,” ..but go on living an ungodly life. Which is it? Ungodly living should create conviction! And that of remorse and repentance. One can’t remain contrary to God’s Will, and then expect to be in the book of life. Let conviction change your heart, and change you! God is a fair God, ..be grateful! Justice and judgment demands a standard. God will never change, and will make clear to you what His standards and judgments are. God has “His” laws that will judge us here. God will decide whether we are the sheep or the goats. Matthew 25: 33-46, 33) And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34) Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: The righteous shall ask, “when saw we thee hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick, in prison, and ministered unto thee? And the Lord shall answer, inasmuch as ye did it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me. And the ones on the left shall ask, when saw we thee, a stranger, hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 41) “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was a hungered, athirst, stranger, naked, sick, in prison, and ye did not minister unto me, 45) …….” inasmuch as ye did not unto these the least of these, ye did it not unto me, And these shall go into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal.” So everyone shall be judged by their every work. As our earthly laws judge us here, so will God’s judgment judge us on that great final judgment day. God has set forth standards with no errors, though man’s judgments are often with errors. God is not unfair, but will keep us aware so we can choose to live justly. He knows our weaknesses. So we can get to that day, prepared to be found innocent by His mercy, from our repentance. Only sin requires restoration. It’s possible to be caught in a “fault or sin.” So we all must bear another’s burdens or faults. We will be judged by that standard of Christlike restoration. 1) “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2) Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. Galatians 6 We need to be obedient to help, and feed often on God’s word, (those are the “works” we will be measured by.) It can’t be all about you, but to be clean by God’s grace to minister and reach out to “the stranger” to accomplish the will of God. This is the Word of God we are measured by. Who is my brother? The stranger! We must bear the burdens of one another. “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Matthew 22:39 The standard of Christ, is the love of Christ that we bestow on others.
