TEXT: LUKE 7:36-39, 44-47
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
The value of devotion! What is devotion? Four elements: 1) Believing. 2) Following Jesus in discipleship 3) Defending of the gospel 4) Loving God. Why are all, or any, of the above so important? What happens when we come out of this “pandemic?” What devotion will we still have? For it is too easy to get sidelined by this life! Verse 44, This woman teaches us so much! What “dreams” have you been chasing? What has been important to you? What has been a goal you were reaching for, that has now been interrupted by the pandemic? This woman came to Jesus as a sinner…that potentially also had a past “dream.” Yet she came and was prostrate at Jesus’s feet! Are you asking, “Is the dream I’ve been chasing, really real?” Many dreams are interrupted, …and even broken! Do you have a devotional life? There has to be a change in us! Is God doing business with you? We cannot cross over into the river of Salvation, unless we do business with Jesus! Today it isn’t popular to think and talk about sin. This woman was a sinner. Yet she came with something that was of far greater value, that she possessed as a sinner! Her will.
Is my will (that is of the greatest value we possess), being brought to God? It involves literally, in heart, being prostrate at Jesus’s feet. Complete submission! Giving all of your power to God. Being 100% vulnerable to God! Letting ‘nothing’ distract you, or keep you away from a devotional life! This woman came and brought her greatest valued possession, and laid it at Jesus’s feet! Jesus told her that her sins which were many, were forgiven! Because she gave her all, to Jesus! We cannot know God, unless we also acknowledge the sinner we have been. Acknowledging our condition! Separated from God, without acknowledging the reality of our sins, brings no forgiveness. All must acknowledge our sins. People are looking for something of value. If you bring all you have, or had, your problems, but even more your self and will, which is your alabaster box, ..Jesus will forgive and raise you up! In Salvation! When she gave of her most valuable possession, this woman was changed! Saved from a multiple of sins! Not to a mere religious person, but changed! If we are not also giving our all, (our alabaster box), devoted to Christ, then we instead are chasing our fleshly dreams! Our dreams need to change to a complete devotion to our Savior! Instead of only bringing Him “along for the ride! ” This woman giving of her all, (the alabaster box), then became a follower of Jesus! A defender of the gospel! Loving God with her all! The message of the church, must be a devotion to God, from an attitude to love God! This will create an attitude of obedience to God! If you take off the lid of your alabaster box, is what is in there, …your “dreams?” Or of your most precious will laid at Jesus feet? What is in your alabaster box? What is in your heart? Are we really coming to Jesus with an anointment of our all? So we can stand on the Rock Christ Jesus?
