He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. Proverbs 25:28

Discouragement is universal. Everybody has been discouraged at some point in time. If you’re discouraged once it doesn’t mean that you’re immune to discouragement again. Have you ever found that out? God gives us victory over discouragement. We need to recognize where discouragement comes from, how it comes, and the remedy for it.

The Devil is the Author of Discouragement.

It was once announced that the devil was going out of business and would offer all of his tools at a price: his price. On the night of the sale, all of the tools were attractively displayed. It was a bad looking lot of them. Malice, murder, hatred, envy, jealousy, sensuality, deceit, lust, and all the other implements of evil were spread out. Each was marked with its price. Apart from the rest was an interesting wedge shaped tool, much worn and priced much higher than the others. Someone asked the devil what was. Discouragement; was his reply. They asked why he priced it so high. He said it was because it was more useful to him than any of the others. He said that he could pry open and get inside and man’s consciousness with it when he couldn’t get near the person with any of his other tools. Once inside, he could use it in any way that suited him best. It was so much worn because he used it with everybody but very few people knew that it belonged to him. It hardly needs to be added that the devils price for discouragement was so high that it was never sold. He still owns and he still using it. Don’t let him use it on you.

God wants us to have victory over discouragement. The definition of discouragement: to make less confident or hopeful, to dishearten, to try to prevent by raising objections or obstacles, to press down, pull down, lower in spirits, make gloomy, and sadden. Every one of us has been discouraged at some point in time. Let’s check why. Why do we get discouraged? Discouragement is dissatisfaction with the past, distaste for the present, and distrust for the future. Think about that. Whenever you’ve been discouraged, you are not satisfied with the situations that are going on around you. Discouragement is ingratitude for the blessings of yesterday, indifference to the opportunities of today, and insecurities regarding the strength for tomorrow. That’s the reason why discouragement is the enemies tool. God has never discouraged anybody. God’s message has always been to be encouraged and be of good cheer. God will never leave us or forsake us.

Discouragement is unaware of the present beauty, unconcerned for the needs of our fellow man, and unbelief in the promises of God. When you’re discouraged, you don’t see the needs of your fellow man. All you see is your problems and what you’re engrossed in. Discouragement is impatience with time, immaturity of thought, and impolite to God. Think about that – impoliteness to God. If we’re not grateful for what God has done, then we’re not going to give him thanks in everything.

Jesus did not let circumstances rule him. He ruled the circumstances. If we’re going to have victory over discouragement, we cannot go by how we feel. We cannot look at the circumstances around us. Our eyes have to be stayed on God and nothing else. When we get to looking around about us and we get our eyes off of God, discouragement is going to come.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee. Isaiah 43:2-3

Are you going to have hard trials? Are you going to have hard situations? This scripture says that you’re going to go through the waters, and you’re going to go through the rivers. It says you’re going to go through the fire, but how is it going to affect you? It’s not going to hurt you if you go through the way that God wants you to.

Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life. Isaiah 43:4

God is going to be with us regardless of what situation we go through. Don’t let the enemy get you discouraged. Discouragement will come, but you have a choice. Choose to be encouraged in the Lord. God has commanded us to be strong and of a good courage. The devil’s command is to be discouraged, to look at all of the rubbish around, and look at all of the trials around. God doesn’t say that. God says to rise and build and the Lord will bless you.
