Mature Class Study, teacher Josh Olmsted.
Why are we here and what are we doing? We’re excited at work when we first get to attend meetings. After a while, that wears off. We have to challenge ourselves when we aren’t engaging and only going through the motions. The Lord said to break up our fallow ground.
Jeremiah 4:3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
Three topics for our study: 1.) fallow ground, 2.) not getting desired results, 3.) God sending the rain.
1.) Fallow ground: There’s a condition called fallow syndrome. Ground is fallow that is left unplanted on purpose after a certain number of crops. The ground gets depleted of nutrients after a certain time. Plants need phosphorus in the ground to grow. They also need water and a fungus found in the ground from roots of previous plants. Ground has to be worked to bring up everything and to be ready for planting. Water and phosphorus are needed in the ground. Ground in Arizona is very hard to work. The longer you leave it that way, the harder it is to work. The Bible says some are “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (II Timothy 3:7). No matter how much we study, we won’t accomplish anything unless the ground of our heart is prepared. God gives different abilities to us all and we have to develop them. When Christ said the harvest is ready, we need to realize we’re developing in different levels of ability.
2.) Not getting desired results: Sometimes we try things that don’t seem to work, so we revert back to fallow ground. Our ways are not God’s ways and we have to learn to work together and be corrected at times. When we see stunted growth, do we say “well that didn’t work”? Paul said let every man prove his own work. We have to be willing to see ourselves as God does and go to work on what we did. Mary was learning at Jesus feet but Martha was busy doing what she thought she should do. Wisdom grows over time. Wise people create a lot of things but may lack wisdom about their soul. Knowing we’re doing what God wants gives lasting success. It’s ok to ask what we’re doing. Are we doing something with what we hear?
We may sometimes think that nothing is happening. If we’re consistent, there are things happening that we may not see. If we’re here for years doing something God shows us, we have to keep doing it. It doesn’t matter if no one sees what we’re doing. We put ground cover over the ground to help things grow.
Galatians 6:4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
3.) God sending the rain: Our ground won’t produce what God wants if it isn’t ready when he sends rain. It takes discipline to stay focused. Over time if we don’t look at what we’re doing, we can just get into a routine and get complacent.
Hosea 10:12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.
There’s a season that God determines for us to reap from what we’ve been doing. Keep doing good to everyone!
Galatians 6:9-10 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
We want our learning to do something and we need balance. Going to visit people but ignoring our family lacks balance.
II Timothy 3:1-4 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
II Timothy 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
We live in a society that doesn’t like judgment. People say “don’t judge me.” We can’t be afraid of judgment if we want God to change and help us in our lives. God gave Paul a thorn in the flesh to produce something good in him.
I Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God…
